透明质酸（HA）是一种高分子量阴离子多糖（1，000-10，000 kD），由重复的二糖组成。它是结缔组织细胞外基质的几种糖胺聚糖成分之一。 游离的透明质酸被肝脏吸收，在那里被降解和回收。许多慢性肝病，包括感染（乙型或丙型肝炎）、毒性（酒精和药物）、遗传（血色素沉着症）、自身免疫和恶性肿瘤，都会导致肝脏炎症，可进展为肝纤维化和肝硬化;导致肝功能受损，导致循环透明质酸水平迅速升高。
